Gerald Erwin was about half way through his wheat at Nutts Corner, Crumlin, Co Antrim, and was combining at 25-30% moisture, despite spraying it off.

“We just cannot get it dry.” Yields were above average at 7.4-8.6t/ha (3-3.5t/acre), but quality was slipping as the grain was now sprouting.

“A lot of farmers are now putting it into the silo as wholecrop to feed the cattle.”

Mr Erwin cut the first of his spring barley yesterday (8 September), which averaged 6.7t/ha (2.7t/acre) at 20% moisture.

He was now two to three weeks behind, and the forecast still did not look great, he said.

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
