Crops in Cornwall are really started to suffer from the wet and windy weather, with barley brackled over and oilseed rape ready to shatter.

Jon Bond of Trerule Farm, Trerulefoot, Saltash, said he was desperate to get on combining, with both winter barley and rapeseed ready to cut.

“I was hoping to get into the barley today, but it’s just starting to rain again.

“We had 48mm on Wednesday (29 July) and although the strong winds are great for drying it out, they’re not so good for the swathed rape.”

Mr Bond had 20ha (50 acres) of winter barley and 22ha (55 acres) of rape to cut, followed by oats and wheat.

“It’s all too similar to last year. I’ve never seen so many depressed farmers,” he said.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
