Harvest 09: Finishing beans in Hants

Neil Saunders has about five hours’ combining left at Hamilton Farm, near Alton, Hampshire.

The Wizard winter beans had so far yielded between 3.7t/ha and over 5t/ha (1.5-2t/acre), and were coming off at 17-18.5% moisture.

“They’ve been mixed, but considering how they looked we’re quite happy,” said Mr Saunders.

The wheat, finished on 18 August, had been excellent, breaking both individual records and average records. “It’s the best wheat harvest we’ve ever had.”

Oakley was “just stunning”, Humber did well on heavy land, and the Solstice yielded well at 12.85-13% protein, 200-250 Hagberg and 78kg/hl.

Cassata winter barley also yielded well, although slightly below last year, and should hopefully go for malting, said Mr Saunders.

Tipple and Quench spring barley had also been pleasing. “But I am concerned about the quality.”

Castille oilseed rape, which was tricky to establish and a bit patchy, produced a surprising yield of almost 4.2t/ha (1.7t/acre).

Farmers in the area had about 5% of their wheat left to cut, followed by spring oilseed rape, linseed and beans, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
