Catherine Thomson has nearly finished combining wheat at Holme House, Holme on Spalding Moor, Yorkshire.

Despite rain this week, a decent spell of weather last week enabled her to cut all bar 20ha (50 acres) of Oakley winter wheat.

“We are on the home straight. After two really difficult years this year has been a dream – we’ve actually started to enjoy it again.”

The wheat varied from awful to fantastic within in the same fields, depending on the drainage and soil structure over the wet winter.

Overall, yields from the 125ha (310 acres) of Alchemy and Oakley were slightly below the long-term average, she reckoned.

Mascani oats had also ranged from excellent to diabolical, but Saffron winter barley yielded well on light land. “It did nicely over 3t/acre (7.4t/ha).”

Castille oilseed rape, drilled very late, suffered from pigeon damage. “At one point it didn’t look as we would have a crop at all, but it was surprisingly good, considering.”

Although a lot of farmers had finished harvest in the area, there was a lot of late-drilled spring barley on the Wolds which was still not fit, she added.
