Steve Tarry was ploughing at Harrington Farms, Kettering, Northamptonshire, today (11 August), and hoped to make a start on Claire winter wheat soon.

“It’s 19% moisture at the moment, but it might go later. It’s looking alright, considering it’s had everything thrown at it, from the bad winter onwards.”

Mr Tarry finished his winter barley and oilseed rape at the weekend, and was thrilled with his OSR yields.

“It was a phenomenal crop – we were very surprised at how much abuse it could take after being desiccated.”

The 29ha (72 acres) of Excalibur, drilled on 23 September at a low seed rate of 4kg/ha (1.6kg/acre) yielded up to 4.9t/ha (2t/acre) in some fields.

“Its ability to side branch into bare patches has been amazing.” The conventional variety Castille performed nearly as well, also reaching almost 4.9t/ha (2t/acre) in places.

Carat winter barley yielded just under 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), although some had to be left until after the oilseed rape due to green straw.

“It was like cutting wire,” said Mr Tarry. The final batch came in at 13.8% moisture on Sunday.

Very little wheat had yet been cut in the area, and many people were struggling to get straw baled, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
