Harvest at Blackbird’s Farm, Aldenham, Hertfordshire, got underway this afternoon (30 July), but showers are already threatening.

“I’d like to have started a fortnight ago but we’ve just had continual showers,” said Alistair Pinkerton.

He sprayed off his oilseed rape four weeks ago. “We don’t want any more heavy rain as I think we could start to see some pod shatter.”

Mr Pinkerton expected to be straight into wheat after the rapeseed, and it looked good at the moment.

“There’s still a lot of rape to be cut in the area, and winter barley to be cut, although some people have had a nibble at some oats.”

With harvest less than 10% through, he would normally have finished his rape by now, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
