Harvest is scarcely underway in Derbyshire, and those that want to get on are being frustrated by the rain, says James Chamberlain of Glebe Farm, Shardlow.
“We’ve only made a bit of a start.” So far had cut 40ha (100 acres) of Bravour oilseed rape, which had averaged about 4t/ha (1.6t/acre).
“It’s not bad given the chequered start it had.”
Having swathed all his rape, Mr Chamberlain was one of the earliest farmers to start combining in the area, and still had Excalibur and more Bravour to get in.
“It wants to come fairly soon. I reckon we’re going to have had 1” of rain today, and it won’t want much more of it.”
Spring barley was not yet ready, and only a few fields of rape had been cut in the area, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
