Harvest 09: Waiting for barley in NE

Geoff Alderslade has finished his first block of winter barley at West Fellgate Farm, Wardley, Tyne & Wear, and is now waiting for the remainder to ripen.

The 14ha (34 acres) of Volume had yielded 9.8t/ha (4t/acre) at 15.5% moisture, with all bar one load reaching 62kg/hl.

That left 16ha (40 acres) of Saffron, which looked well, and 12ha (30 acres) of spring oilseed rape, which also looked promising. “I’m looking forward to seeing what that does,” he said.

“Progress is about normal for around here – there was a lot started on Monday (27 July). But we’re still busy trying to make haylage.”

Harvest was a month ahead of last year, which was thwarted by the torrential summer. “There are one or two wet spots in the fields but it’s a lot better than last year.”
