Phil Dowson hoped to be into some Battalion winter wheat this afternoon at High House Farm, Richmond, North Yorkshire.

“The weather has been catchy at best. It’s only just fit now – but if we had a week of sunshine we’d blaze through it.”

Mr Dowson had cut 8ha (20 acres) of Oakley third wheat last Sunday (9 August), and was disappointed with yields of 7.4t/ha (3t/acre). “It had died off rather than ripened.”

He now had 49ha (120 acres) of winter wheat to finish, as well as 4ha (10 acres) of Optic spring barley, which was ready now, and 12ha (30 acres) of spring oilseed rape, which was still some two weeks away.

“I’m hoping there will be some quality in the Battalion. We’re being a bit more patient this year, because we had such horrendous drying costs last year.”

Nearly all the winter barley in the area was finished, and farmers were about 40% through their winter rapeseed, he said.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
