Harvest Highlights – barley finished, wheat not ready means idle combine

Chris Ashcroft of Great Wilbraham couldn’t take advantage of today’s [30 July] good weather after finishing combining his winter barley.

Winter wheat wouldn’t be ready for another seven days, he said.

Mr Ashcroft had harvested 200ha of Flagon winter barley. It yielded 5.5t/ha at 15% moisture with 3% screenings and 1.53-1.6% nitrogen. Yields this year were down on his five-year average of 6.04t/ha, he said.

He would only be able to start combining 150ha of Gladiator winter wheat in seven days time after the Roundup (glyphosate) he was spraying currently had had time to work

He also had 200ha of Optic spring barley to cut and 50ha of peas not yet desiccated.

Mr Ashcroft said: “The forecast looks good for next week except for a blip on Thursday, but I think it will be quiet here.”
