Gerald Erwin was busy finishing off his winter wheat at Nutts Corner, Crumlin, Northern Ireland, when FWi rang him today (August 28). “The weather recently has been exceptional.”
A third consecutive feed wheat crop, it was yielding a pleasing 7.7t/ha (3.1t/acre) at 16-17% moisture. That would leave Mr Erwin with 20ha (50 acres) of spring barley to cut. “We’re about half way through the barley and it’s yielded between 4.7 and 6.2t/ha (1.9-2.5t/acre),” he said.
“Barley straw yields have also been very good here – we’re getting seven to eight round bales per acre which is very good for us.”
Having bought a second combine last year, Mr Erwin’s harvest was a week and a half ahead of normal, allowing him to move on and cut about 34ha (85 acres) of spring barley for neighbours when it ripened in a couple of weeks time.
