With harvest completed almost 10 days ago at Mark Ireland’s farm in Lincolnshire, he decided to move on to help out a neighbouring farm with their wheat.
“We’re not combining today because it rained overnight, and the forecast is good for a few days now so it’s worth waiting for it to dry,” he said.
Wheat yields on his own farm were about 1.2t/ha (0.5t/acre) below normal, at 7.4t/ha (3t/acre). The 243ha (600 acres) of Xi 19 and Hereward was combined early but not all made full spec for milling, with Hagbergs down to 200 in the Hereward.
The 486ha (1200 acres) of spring barley yielded well, with the Tipple making 6.6t/ha (2.67t/acre) and the Cocktail averaging 6.3t/ha (2.55t/acre). Quality was good at 1.55-1.65% Nitrogen although bushelweights were low at 61-63kg/hl.
The 257ha (635 acres) of Flagon winter barley averaged 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) at 64-65kg/hl.
