ARABLE FARMERS need to focus more on weed management rather than weed control, according to Bayer CropScience.

Compared to 30 years ago, modern low dose, selective products have changed the way growers should view herbicide strategies, said the firm’s herbicide product manager, Nick Duncan.

“We’re in a position now where growers can design weed management programmes to remove the most pernicious or problematic weeds.”

Non-chemical methods of control, such as cultivations, crop rotations, delayed drilling and competitive crops are also increasingly important, he said.

“The combined use of cultural and chemical control should help to deliver long term weed control.”

In order to help growers identify the main target weeds, Bayer has just produced its updated ‘Weed Guide’, which features 26 grass weeds and 49 broad-leaved weed species.
