THE government is expected to announce the results of its field scale trials of genetically modified winter oilseed rape on Mon (March 21).

These are final results from the government”s Farm Scale Evaluations of genetically herbicide tolerant crops.

Ahead of the results, anti-GM campaigners published information that questioned biotech industry claims made last year about the four-year BRIGHT project. It was claimed the project showed wildlife benefits could be achieved by growing GM crops.

But the report, produced for campaign groups GeneWatch UK, the Five Year Freeze and Friends of the Earth by the Initiative on Organic Research, concluded that the design of the BRIGHT trials meant environmental impacts could not be investigated properly, and that the results did not support claims about environmental benefits.
