Winter wheat yields in the HGCA Recommended List trials are close to the five-year average of 9.93 t/ha, with one potential bread-making candidate showing promise.

KWS Kielder currently tops the standings, achieving a yield of 108% over control varieties, closely followed by Dickens (107%), KWS Santiago (106%), Conqueror (105%) and Cocoon (105%).

On yield alone, the Nabim Group 1 varieties, Crusoe and Solstice achieved 99%, in Group 2 the best yields came from Chilton (102%) and Panorama (99%).

Oats a winner

  • Winter oats could prove to be the surprise winner this season, yielding nearly 9t/ha, according to the latest RL results. The control mean is currently at 8.95t/ha, more than 0.5t/ha above the five-year mean of 8.41t/ha.

While the quality figures are not yet available, looking just at yield, potential milling variety Skyfall has had a good year and has a five-year mean of 104%.

“It looks like a useful variety on yield,” says HGCA Recommended List manager Simon Oxley. For example in Group 1, it offers an extra 4% above the highest yielder (Crusoe), but he adds that it still going through the Nabim testing process.

Of the other candidates, Evolution and Panacea are “giving decent yields.” Evolution stands out at 107%, being quite a late maturing, hard feed wheat.

“It is looking to offer a good disease resistance package with a barn busting yield,” he says.

Panacea with a yield of 106% also compares well with established barn filler KWS Santiago. But Dr Oxley points out that after two different seasons, Santiago has performed consistently in a range of seasons.

Couger has also had a good year (104%) and is again a later maturing variety.

Cougar was the “stand-out” variety for Russell McKenzie at Hoo Farm, Bedfordshire, who grew 60ha on medium and heavy soils.

Yield averaged 11.5t/ha and peaked at 11.85t, with specific weights at 73.5kg/hl and Hagbergs at around 230. “It was 0.4-0.8t/ha above our next-best variety,” he says.
