Robert Naylor was harvesting in “lovely weather” in Stamford, Lincolnshire, with pleasing results. His Carat winter barley came off about the same as last year and with “very good” quality, he said. The crop which had not been sold, had not been tested yet.

His winter wheats looked “very stressed” in the fields from the drought, and he expected them to be ready to harvest within two to three weeks.

Oilseed rape had also “looked in a fair bit of stress ten days ago from the hot weather”. But Mr Naylor added: “They are looking very nice now.” All varieties were equally as strong, and he expected to start cutting next week.

“It has all gone very well considering we’ve had no rain in a month.”
