Mark Ireland finished his winter wheat at Grange Farm, Sleaford, Lincs, on Friday night (29 August), and was now contract combining on the coast.
“We’re very pleased with the wheat,” he said. Yields were about 15% up, averaging about 11t/ha (4.5t/acre).
The Oakley had yielded 10.8-12.1t/ha (4.4-4.9t/acre) as a first wheat, and Cordiale made 9.9-11.4t/ha (4-4.6t/acre). Its Hagberg was good but protein was a little low as 12-12.5%.
Quench and Tipple spring barley performed well, averaging 6.7t/ha (2.7t/acre) across first, second and third barley crops.
Mr Ireland was now combining on the coast, and quality seemed to be holding up well.
He was also busy drilling oilseed rape. “We are behind, but a good week and we’d be back in order again.”
