The barley yielded well, with a Pearl / Pict blend averaging 8t/ha (3.25t/acre) and topping 12.3t/ha (5t/acre) in one part of the field. “We’ve been growing blends for the past few years and it seems to have boosted our yields and improved the sample.”

27ha (67 acres) of Boost yielded 9.6t/ha (3.9t/acre), with Saffron yielding the same. A 1ha (2.5 acre) trial plot of Volume exceeded 9.9t/ha (4t/acre). “I’m certainly encouraged by these new varieties and I’ve got some more seed ordered,” said Mr Bridges.

He now had 178ha (440 acres) of rape to cut, much of which had lodged and been attached by pigeons. The 425ha (1050 acres) of spring barley was at least two weeks away, and the 271ha (670 acres) of wheat would not be ready until September, he added.

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
