Meurig Raymond hoped to finish harvest at Trenewydd Fawr, Haverfordwest, Pembs, this weekend (27/28 September) after a good run this week.
“This past week has been a Godsend,” he said. He had now finished his wheat, which had averaged over 10t/ha (4t/acre), although some bushelweights were low.
“It’s alright, but it’s not what it might have been.”
About two thirds of Mr Raymond’s spring barley would be consigned to the feed bin. “That’s going to hurt financially.”
He still had 40ha (100 acres) of spring barley to finish and 16ha (40 acres) of beans. “On the train back from London I have passed a fair few fields of wheat still to be cut.”
He hoped to finish drilling oilseed rape on Monday. “Conditions are warm and there’s plenty of moisture so I think it will be alright.”
