Harriet Besent has finished harvest at Higher Melcombe Farm, Ansty, Dorchester, Dorset, and is now flat out calving dairy cows.
“We were very pleased with our wheat and spring barley; the winter barley was not too bad but the oilseed rape was rubbish,” she said.
- Crop: Oilseed rape
- Variety: Quartz
- Yield: 2.5t/ha
Although the Quartz only managed 2.5t/ha, it was grown on tricky land, and the best yield Miss Besent had heard for oilseed rape in the area was only 3.5t/ha. “None of it has done well.”

Propino spring barley yielded above average, with Cassia winter barley coming in about average for the farm, she added.
“We had Diego winter wheat and were very pleased with the yield. But we had to spray it so many times to keep Septoria under control that I don’t think we’ll grow it again.”
Miss Besent was loading oilseed rape today (3 September), and said that while most medium-sized farms in the area had finished harvest, the larger units were still busy combining.
“My boyfriend is cutting spring wheat today. Where farmers haven’t finished the crops are not looking very special now.”
