No haymaking today in Richmond

Phil Dowson’s haymaking has been rained off today (12 August) at High House Farm, Richmond, Yorkshire.

But he had finished combining oilseed rape and was now waiting for the wheat to ripen.

The 14ha (35 acres) of Catana rapeseed yielded about average at 4.4t/ha (1.8t/acre).

“We were quite pleased – it looked well all year, but after the hard frosts and dry spring I wasn’t holding up any great hope.”

The 60ha (150 acres) of Viscount, Oakley and Cassius winter wheat was still about a week away from ripening.

“One or two neighbours have had a go at second wheats, where they have just died off,” said Mr Dowson.

“Ours looks alright but it didn’t tiller that well, so it’s quite thin in places. Quality should be okay though.”
