Cliff Armsby from Kings Lynn said harvest was “not too bad” in Norfolk. One hundred hectares of Pearl winter barley yielded 6.25t/ha, which was 0.5t/ha up on last year.

Quality was “not bad”, with 1.5% screenings. Mr Armsby was pleased the crop quality passed malting specification to be sold on the contract.

With 8ha of barley remaining, he hoped to start cutting oilseed rape today because the crop was “looking well”. Harvest was a couple of days ahead of schedule.

But he said wheat was starting to go off in the heat: “Some of the wheat is not really holding out.” He expected to start combining within a fortnight, which would be earlier than usual.
