Norfolk wheat yields well down

Two full days of dry weather should see harvest completed at Cherry Tree Farm, Ten Mile Bank, Norfolk. “We’re close to being done and we hope that the weather will come right towards the end of the week,” said John Kisby. “That would put us ahead of most years.”

Mr Kisby was pleased with the 89ha (220 acres) of Castille oilseed rape, which yielded as well as any other year. “But the wheat yields have been significantly down on probably any year we’ve ever known.”

Of the 283ha (700 acres) of Alchemy, Einstein and Cordiale wheat, Mr Kisby had about 30ha (75 acres) left to cut. “It’s been standing up well but it just hasn’t filled out in the ear. However, quality has been about average and the Cordiale might make milling.”
