On hold near Clochan

Frank Thomson was making good harvest progress at Burnside of Tynet, Clochan, Moray, until rain stopped play last night (15 August).

Fortunately, he had managed to finish cutting winter barley, and was pleased with yields, despite unsatisfactory bushel weights.

“We had 28ha of Volume, which has yielded well at 9.3t/ha, but the bushel weight was very poor,” he said.

He managed to get a start on the 58ha of oilseed rape last night, before being rained off.

“I wouldn’t like to say what it’s yielding just yet but I’d predict about 4.3t/ha,” he said. “It looks a promising crop.”

Despite last night’s showers, Mr Thomson hoped to get going again this afternoon, ahead of more wet weather due tomorrow.

After the rapeseed would be 320ha of spring barley, which he anticipated would be another two and a half weeks away.
