Peter Bawn, farm manager at Cranbourne farms in Dorset had done 108ha (269 acres) out of the total 332ha (830 acres) of ES Astrid, NK Grace, Expert and NK Bravour oilseed rape so far.
Yields were around 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre) and quality was very good, with oil contents averaging around 44%, he said.
Crops were around 12% moisture, although more rain meant nothing would be cut today. “It’s too late to worry about moisture, we’ve just got to get on with it,” he said.
Despite black shaded stalks Mr Bawn’s 50ha (125 acres) of winter barley for feed “looked good” and would be cut after his rape.
He was not worried that he had spring barley and oats that were still green, although; “some sunshine would be nice,” he said
Mr Bawn said optimistically “there’s a long way to go yet, but we’ll get it in. The countries’ in for a real problem if we don’t.”
