Phil Dowson finished combining at High House Farm, Richmond, Yorks, on Sunday (21 September), and was now busy ploughing and drilling winter wheat.

“We were quite fortunate because we got most of our wheat cut before the really heavy rain,” he said.

First wheats had yielded over 10t/ha (4t/acre), with second wheats at about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).

However, the final 16ha (40 acres) cut last week suffered from low bushelweights and therefore poorer yields, he said. “At least we got it in.”

Most people were finishing off in the area, with just a few fields of wheat and beans to get in.

Mr Dowson had managed to plant 28ha (70 acres) of winter wheat, but didn’t manage to get any rape in at all. “It’s too late now on our farm so I’ve got some spring rape ordered.”

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
