Progress on target in Wiltshire

Harvest progress is about normal in Wiltshire, according to Nick Brown, store manager at Wiltshire Grain.

So far he had taken in about 2000t of winter barley and oilseed rape, which was about right for the time of year.

“Winter barley seems to have a good bushelweight, and has been mostly dry – the highest we’ve had was 17%,” he said.

Nitrogen content for malting barley was on the low side, but acceptable.

Oilseed rape started arriving on Tuesday (20 July), and looked to be of good quality. Moisture varied from 8% to 22%, and oil content was higher than normal, at 44-46%.

With farmers in the area rained off today (22 July), there was plenty of haulage available, added Mr Brown. “Almost the only people phoning me are hauliers.”
