More rain in Ickleton, Essex, this morning meant Peter Wombwell was not likely to make a start on his organic spring wheat for a few days yet. “It will take two to three days to dry out.”

However, all the rest of his wheat was now in the barn, with 93 ha (230 acres) of Robigus yielding 8.6-9.3t/ha (3.5-3.75t/acre) and 7.7ha (19 acres) of Solstice making 8t/ha (3.25t/acre).

The 80ha (200 acres) of Cordiale came in dry at almost 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre) and 13.5% protein.

Mr Wombwell’s Profit peas struggled with broadleaved weeds and yielded 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre).

“We’ve got some rape drilled and up, and we’re about to do battle with the slugs – there are legions of them out there, of biblical proportions.”
