Heavy rain continued to frustrate harvest at Carl Tuer’s Rock Farms, Alnwick, Northumberland, and yields were nothing better than average.

“It’s just been absolutely unbelievable – it was horrendously wet here last night (3 September) and it’s forecast to be dreadful tomorrow.”

Mr Tuer had cut 80ha (200 acres) of Claire winter wheat, which had averaged about 10t/ha (4t/acre).

The oilseed rape yielded 3.9t/ha (1.6t/acre), with all three varieties performing the same, despite appearances. “Crops that looked really good were not a lot better than the others.”

The Pearl winter barley came in at 18% moisture and averaged 8.9t/ha (3.6t/acre). It all made malting quality, he said.

Oxbridge spring barley was only just ready, but the wheat was ripe and winter oats were lodged.

“We have got shed loads to do,” said Mr Tuer. “We haven’t had any quality losses yet but that may change after the weekend.”

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
