Respectable yields near Scarborough

Derek Lamplough has finished this year’s harvest following the good weather at Manor Farm, Scarborough, Yorkshire, with respectable yields all round.

The 48ha of Venture winter barley averaged 7.4t/ha. And 34ha of Propino spring barley reached the same yield, as well as reaching malting quality.

“Both spring and winter barley were very good, but not quite up to last year,” said Mr Lamplough.

Conqueror and Viscount winter wheat averaged 9.9t/ha, coming off at around 17% moisture.

“Although we’ve had to dry everything to some degree, cutting wheat below 17% in this part of the world was great for us,” he added. “There was just the odd opening where we were up to 19%, and in some cases moisture dropped as low as 15%.”

Despite not seeing record performances on the farm, Mr Lamplough felt this year had not been terrible by any means.

“Last year we saw the highest yields yet for the farm. Even though it hasn’t been a top year, it’s satisfying to know everything’s off of the ground and we have no complaints at all.”
