Robert Craig finished his winter barley at Carse Hall, Ballykelly, Londonderry, on Saturday (9 August), combining at 20% moisture.

The 50ha (125 acres) of Saffron yielded slightly above average at 10.4t/ha (4.2t/acre), he said. “Locally there’s still 25-30% of winter barley to cut – and about 50% of the oilseed rape to do.”

Mr Craig now had just spring barley to harvest – which was still four to five weeks away. “It’s still very green.”

The Riviera, Sweeney and Westminster would struggle to yield 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) this year, having been drilled late followed by 10 weeks with no rain. “It’s just all over the place.”

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
