Robert Law was struggling to combine flat oats at Thrift Farm, Royston, Herts, today (17 September).

“It’s just such slow going at the moment – it would almost be better to put a match to it,” he said. “It’s been absolutely horrendous.”

He still had 40ha (100 acres) of wheat, the same of oats, and 49ha (120 acres) of rye to cut. “It’s amazing how the wheat has borne up.”

Bushelweights had only dropped from 80kg/hl at their peak to 76kg/hl now, with Wizard weathering the rain particularly well.

“We have had some very good yields – spring barley was exceptional this year,” said Mr Law.

“Although it’s overcast, most of us will finish in the next few days around here.”

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
