Robin Baines has one field of beans and some neighbour’s wheat to finish at Tunstead, Hoveton, Norfolk.

“I know we’ve got off lightly compared with the rest of the country, but it doesn’t feel like it at the time,” he said.

Although most of the grain had to be dried, yields had been above average, which made up for the extra costs, he said.

“I’d like to think we averaged 10t/ha (4t/acre), and would be disappointed if we’ve averaged less than 9.5t/ha (3.85t/acre).”

Quality had been fine so far, and Mr Baines had drilled 120ha (300 acres) over the past week on mainly light land.

Both the spring and winter barley averaged about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) and almost all made the malting grade.

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
