Soft ground conditions are concerning James Grant-Suttie at Balgone Farms, North Berwick, East Lothian, but he hopes to be back into harvest tomorrow (August 23).

 

“We’ve had a lot of rain since the last dry spell and there is quite a lot of wheat which has gone flat,” he said. “But the Oxbridge spring barley looks very good and hopefully we’ll be into that tomorrow, and make a start on the Robigus and Riband wheat next week.”

 

During the last dry period Mr Grant-Suttie managed to harvest the 36ha (90 acres) of Excalibur oilseed rape at 7-8% moisture and a very pleasing 4.9t/ha (2t/acre). The 32ha (80 acres) of Pearl winter barley also came in then, at 8.2t/ha (3.3t/acre) and 1.9% Nitrogen content.

 

“We’ve had no disasters but we’re about one week behind last year and up here conditions can deteriorate pretty quickly once you get into September, so hopefully we’ll have a couple of fine weeks now.”
