The wet weekend had given way to drier weather today, allowing Graham Furey to get started on the spring barley at Castleview, Killyleagh, County Down.
“I think this is the first spring barley to be cut around here and the forecast is pretty good for the rest of the week,” he said. The 40ha (100 acres) of Wicket and Westminster barley looked good, so he hoped it would weigh well.
Already in the barn was 16ha (40 acres) of Einstein winter wheat, which yielded between 8t and 8.6t/ha (3.25-3.5t/acre). The Gerald winter oats were also finished, coming in at 6.1-6.8t/ha (2.5-2.75t.acre), and the Expert oilseed rape disappointed at 3.1t/ha (1.25t/acre).
