A bachelor’s harvest is how Keith Snowball of Yorkshire-based contractor J. L. Snowball & Partners described this season. “You just grab it when you can.”

Over the past 10 days he has only managed to harvest 35ha (86 acres) of Solstice winter wheat, with yields varying from 6.9t/ha (2.8t/acre) to 8.2t/ha (3.3t/acre). “It’s averaged about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) but that’s been starting on the poorer, lighter land.”

However, the sample had been promising, at 13.6% protein, 218-289 Hagberg, 73.5kg/hl and up to 20% moisture. Mr Snowball hoped to start on the remaining 14ha (34 acres) tomorrow if the weather remained dry.

“There are lodged patches and we’re just starting to worry about sprouting. The crops are ripe and we’re probably three to four days behind the five-year average, but a little ahead of the 10-year average.”

Mr Snowball also had spring barley, beans and feed wheat left to cut.
