The NFU’s sugar board chairman has warned British Sugar that there needs to be a “rebalancing of risk” to give farmers confidence to continue growing the crop.

William Martin was speaking after a grower meeting to discuss the current difficulties facing farmers, which was held in Thetford on Tuesday (1 February).

Mr Martin told Farmers Weekly there was a clear message that farmers did not trust the partnership they were in.

“They believe it is an unbalanced partnership. They believe they bear an unfair balance of risk in these long campaigns,” he said.
