Waiting for wheat to dry in Cambridgeshire

Last night’s rain and forecasted showers had the combine parked at Anthony Morbey’s Cole Ambrose Farm, Ely, Cambridgeshire today.

Mr Morbey is half way through his spring and winter wheat crops.

The 200ha (500acres) of Robigus and Solstice cut so far yielded a disappointing 7.5t/ha (3t/acre) at 15% moisture.

Mr Morley has already sold 700t for £90/tonne to Fengrain.

The 80ha (200 acres) of spring wheat was expected to be ready in 10 days and didn’t look very good. Mr Morbey expected just 5t/ha (2t/acre).

He also had 60ha (150 acres) of Natioche peas to combine which would be ready within the next few days.

He predicted 3.7-5t/ha (1.3-2t/acre)

“We’re a little later with progress this year, but it’s weather-related. “You can’t beat it, it’s a fact”
