Welsh farmers rewarded for green measures

Farmers in Wales who make simple changes to reduce the impact of their enterprises on local rivers and the countryside could be in line for a reward from a government agency.

Environment Agency Wales, in conjunction with Farming Connect, is the first to launch a new award scheme that will recognise farmers who cover slurry stores, create reed beds or make similar improvements that both benefit the environment and increase farm profitability.

The winner of the Simple Solutions Farm Award will receive a combination of professional advice and money for further environmental improvements.

Chris Mills, director of Environment Agency Wales, says there is an increasing readiness by farmers to look at solutions that reduce the impact of their farms on the environment, such as improving cattle tracks, roofing yards and collecting rainwater.

“It’s great when we see on our many farm visits changes in attitude from the industry and a willingness to look at new ways of doing things,” says Mr Mills.

Closing date for entries is 25 June. Application forms are available here.
