Wheat and bean yields down in Warwickshire
David Brightman finished harvest at Gaydon Hill Farm, Warwickshire, on Monday (August 27), with wheat yields about 1.2t/ha (0.5t/acre) down on a good year.
The 200ha (500 acres) of Hereward, Einstein and Solstice averaged 8t/ha (3.25t/acre), but Mr Brightman had not had any samples tested yet.
The 40ha (100 acres) of Punch beans were very disappointing, yielding less than 2.5t/ha (1t/acre). “They looked good but the pods and beans were very small. I’ve spoken to a couple of neighbours with different varieties who said exactly the same.”
Mr Brightman had also finished drilling, rolling, spraying and slug pelleting his winter rape, which was now emerging, he said.
