Wheat is nowhere near fit at Philip Gorringe’s Lower Blakemere Farm, Herefordshire, so is standing up well to the wet weather.

“The wheat looks fine – it is still standing and still quite green, thank goodness,” he said.

Mr Gorringe harvested 30ha (75 acres) of Saffron winter barley for seed before the rain, averaging 9t/ha (3.75t/acre). “I’m very pleased with that – and it was a nice sample.”

He had also cut some grass seed before the rain, leaving 61ha (150 acres) more grass seed, 10ha (25 acres) of Saffron, and 40ha (100 acres) of vining peas to cut before moving onto the wheat.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
