Lionel Wells of Dedington, Banbury, Oxfordshire was set to start cutting Malacca wheat this morning. He thought yield prospects looked well at Leadenporch Farm for his 100ha (250acres) of winter wheat, including Richmond, Einstein, Malacca, Brompton, Zebedee.

“We’re just making the most of the fine weather,” he said.

Of 4.4ha (11acres) Malacca, almost half was cut last night at just above 14% moisture. Crops looked hopeful he said, and specific weights were 78-79 kg/hl. He had also nearly completed Richmond and Einstein winter heat.

Mr Wells had three more working days left on wheat weather permitting

The farm’s 50ha (125acres) of oilseed rape had also been completed, yielding 3-3.7t/ha (24-30 cwt/acre). Moisture content had varied between 6.2-14%.

While oilseed rape yields disappointed, he was hopeful that wheat could do better than last year.
