After three wet days, Gloucestershire Contractor Andrew Bullock was about to make a start on second wheat Einstein when he spoke to FWi this morning.
He would cut the last 7ha (17.5 acres) of 70ha (175 acres) and expected it to come in at 28% moisture. Crops did not look “special” and he thought yields would barely reach 7.5 t/ha.
He expected to move on to Robigus winter wheat this afternoon and hoped that the 200ha (500acres) would yield 8-8.5 t/ha (3.2- 3.4 t/acre).
He expected 10% lower yields than average for second wheat and said:
“We’re around a quarter of the way through the wheat and I think variety type has had little to do with differences in yield.”
Mr Bullock had 100ha (250 acres) of Alchemy to finish which was still green;
Spring Barley had also yielded about average, whereas oats and oilseed rape had been more pleasing.
“We could do with another fortnight of dry weather; we’ve still got a lot to do yet”
