Wind causing problems in Dorset

The combine was rolling again at James Bowditch’s farm near Bridport, Dorset, with moisture contents dipping below 20% for the first time in a week.

“We did a bit at 24% and had to stop. It is drying out now but this wind is doing some damage today (August 22),” he said. Wheat yields were about 10% down on last year, with Alchemy and Gatsby winter wheat averaging 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre).

The winter barley was all cut early for crimping. “It was very variable – where it had dried out in April the crop was dreadful but we got over 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre) in some places,” said Mr Bowditch.

He is now making a start on the final 40ha (100 acres) of Exsept, Alchemy and Sherborne winter wheat. “We’ve cut a lot for other people so ours has had to wait – although it hasn’t really been fit until now.”
