This weekend (27/28 September) should see harvest finished off in Shropshire, according to Rob Bebbington, who finished at Fieldfare Farms two weeks ago.

“There’s still a fair bit to be cut but it’s amazing how quickly it can turn round.” He reckoned farmers still had about 15% left to do. “It will soon get mopped up.”

Mr Bebbington’s wheat had averaged 9.1t/ha (3.7t/acre), which was relatively pleasing, he said.

Spring barley yielded 6.8t/ha (2.76t/acre) but did not make malting quality, while the winter barley had averaged 9.3t/ha (3.75t/acre).

“We’ve got no milling wheat and no malting barley, but it’s in the shed so we’re thankful for small mercies.”
