Winter barley harvest under way in Kent

Winter barley harvest started yesterday (29 June), around two weeks early, for David Holt, who farms near Ashford in Kent.

“We started in June once before around five years ago, but usually we would begin around 10 July,” he said.

Yields cut so far from the 54ha of Carat winter barley are around 7t/ha, with a specific weight of around 70kg/ha. “That’s down 22% on last season, when we averaged 8.53t/ha.”
