Winter wheat yields 10% down in east Kent

A late finish before the weather broke saw Michael Taylor clear the last of his 160 ha (400acres) of winter wheat.

He finished cutting at 11 o’clock on Monday night at Hope farm, Folkestone in Kent

Solstice and Claire accounted for two-thirds of his wheat. Both yielded around 9.3t/ha (3.72 t/acre), whereas Zebedee yielded less at 8.5t/ha (3.4 t/acre).

He would expect 10t/ha in a normal year and had sold 20% of his crop and was hoping prices would rise further.

“Yields are disappointing, some 10% down.”

He hoped to finish drying down by last night.

He was also growing 20ha (50 acres) of Nexera spring rape, which would receive a £50 premium over the standard rape price. He hoped to begin soon, weather permitting.
