Grain Merchant Chris Spedding thought wheat yields were below average this year across Hampshire. He said: “Yields across the board have been lower than 10 year records,” but better prices would offset that he added.
Mr Spedding began cutting “good-looking” Mascot wheat last night, “it was coming in at 15%.”
Only about 10-15% of winter wheat had been cut in the county so far. The lowest yield he had heard of was 6.2 t/ha (2.48t/acre).
Most of Hampshire’s winter barley was finished yesterday after 10 days work.
And despite the recent wet weather, Mr Spedding said oilseed rape had averaged 3.2-3.7 t/ha (26-30 cwt/acre) in the region.
