Zebedee winter wheat is yielding well at Alan Hind’s Elm Tree Farm
Zebedee winter wheat is yielding fantastically well at Alan Hind’s Elm Tree Farm, near Grantham, Lincs, averaging 11.7t/ha (4.75t/acre)
“We can’t believe it ourselves – that’s a tonne an acre more than I ever could have hoped,” he said. Combining of the second wheat only started yesterday (4 August), after some excellent rape and barley crops.
“Rape has always been a disappointment – this year it was completely the opposite,” said Mr Hind. The 80ha (200 acres) of Castille averaged 4.2t/ha (1.7t/acre), with the 134ha (330 acres) of Excel yielding about 4.6t/ha (1.85t/acre).
Saffron winter barley was also pleasing, at 9.1t/ha (3.7t/acre). “It just looks like a good corn year.”
