Ad launched to bolster support for US cage ban

A new advertising campaign has been launched by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and United Egg Producers (UEP) in support of the US conventional cage ban.

The advert, which appeared in The Hill and Politico yesterday, features the headline: “America’s hens give us 76 billion eggs a year. Let’s give them something in return.”

The advert comes just weeks after moves to ban conventional cages in the US started, with politicians submitting an amendment bill to supersede state laws and improve hen welfare in Washington at the end of last month.

The groups said the campaign would continue in media outlets and act a reminder to lawmakers that no federal funds are being requested, that leading scientists are embracing the reform and the legislation is only specific to eggs.

“Eggs are a national commodity, and egg producers should have a level playing field – not have different, costly rules in all 50 states,” Gene Gregory, president of UEP reiterated.

“We need this legislation for our customers and consumers and the survival of egg farmers,” he added.
